Why we do Playcentre

New Zealand is a wonderful place to raise children for many reasons:

1. In most areas of the country, it is very green and there are ample opportunities for children to jump in puddles, roll down hills, go camping, kayaking, orienteering and more. They really foster a love for the outdoors and active living here.
2. PLAY is an essential part of being a kid.

Over the last couple years we have been attending our local playcentre. It is like a preschool co-operative run by parents and an early education supervisor.

"Playcentre philosophy is based on child-initiated play and recognises the parents as the first and best educators of their own children. Playcentre families receive a unique early childhood experience with opportunities for whānau/families to learn together." ( http://www.playcentre.org.nz/ )

 How it works:
  • We pay a fee every term - but that is subsidised if you pay on time and we can attend as many sessions a week as we want.
  • J and  I go together and I am her primary cargeiver, but lots of parents and children interact.
  • It is very child-led and play is the main purpose. Children build confidence, social skills and embrace their creative side as they play alongside and with each other.
  • Parents get to chat and share ideas. We also have days where we are rostered on to help set-up and tidy. You can also take courses in Early Childhood Education.

We really find it wonderful and are looking forward to the next couple years playing and learning together.
